“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11, NIV
Years ago Blaise Pascal said, “Within all of us is a God-shaped vacuum that only God can fill.” This void cries out from deep within us to be filled. Many in our world try to respond to this cry by filling the emptiness in a variety of ways: money, recreation, sexual pleasure, drugs and alcohol, success, education, fame, or power. Perhaps you or someone you love has tried to feed this inner longing for that elusive “more” in one of these ways only to discover on the other end of the experience more disappointment and disillusionment than before.
Jesus is well aware of this inner void and longing. In John 7:37 He refers to it in these words. If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. The next verse explains this truth even further. By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. From Jesus’ perspective this hole in the human soul is precisely shaped to be filled by God’s Holy Spirit who brings refreshment, renewal, and spiritual reality to life!
Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who studies the human brain. He has documented what he believes to be physiological evidence from his research that humans are hard-wired to believe in God. “That is why religion thrives in an age of reason,” says Newberg. Our brains have a built-in link to spirituality. Imagine that! No. Move beyond imagining and believe! Let Jesus bring His living water to irrigate the deep furrows of your soul.
QUESTION: Have you been filling your life with something other than the Spirit? What needs to move out for Him to move in?
