“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
Counselor to be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth.”
John 14:16, NIV
There is great confusion about the ministry of the Holy Spirit today. Many marvel at the works of the Spirit and seek to give the Holy Spirit prominence within the church. Yet, the Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the counselor of God and seeks to point people to Jesus Christ. What is the work of the Holy Spirit?
It is to counsel believers. The Holy Spirit counsels by enlightening hearts to who Jesus is and how He saves. The Holy Spirit counsels believers about the truth contained in Scripture and applies it to their lives. In an age when many are seeking to have a counselor give them advice, it would be wise for people to turn to the greatest counselor of all, the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit communes with believers. The Holy Spirit is the place where God becomes personal for each individual believer. It is the Holy Spirit that seals them in the faith and takes up residence in their life. The Holy Spirit enables believers to have a personal relationship with God. Jesus described it as a friendship that enjoys uninterrupted fellowship.
The Holy Spirit comforts believers. It is the Holy Spirit that provides comfort from God. The Holy Spirit comforts in sorrow, encourages in depression, exhorts to holy living, and provides the presence of God in loneliness. The Holy Spirit assures of salvation, shares God’s love and gives God’s peace.
The Holy Spirit convicts believers. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to disturb believers who have become comfortable in their spiritual journey. The Spirit pricks the heart of those who have fallen into sin. This work of the Spirit assures believers of their salvation and restrains believers from sin.
QUESTION: How has the Holy Spirit been working in your life? Has the Holy Spirit pointed you to Jesus today?
