“You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14, 16, NIV
That is the fifth book of the New Testament? The Acts of the Apostles. It is not the Thoughts of the Apostles or the Ideas of the Apostles. It is the Acts of the Apostles! Why? Because following Jesus is more than thinking or imagining, it is about doing! Someone said, “When all is said and done there will be much more said than done!” Jesus challenged his followers to live their lives so as to lead others into a positive relationship with the Father. The influence each of us wields is powerful enough to illumine the world for God! We are to light the way for the world through our good works. Three words come to mind: influence, initiative and impact.
Jesus sees each of his followers possessing incredible influence. Me? You? Lights for the world – leaders on a world stage so others can find reason to praise God for themselves. We possess the influence to impact someone else’s eternity, so Jesus wants us to take the initiative and shine! Act, so as to impact eternally, in another’s life.
How different this is from the sentiment of Oliver Wendell Holmes, “Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.” Whittier said it this way, “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been.'” Jesus did not create you or redeem you to be a “might have been”. You are designed and enlightened by the Spirit to shine! Shine on, light of the world!
