“…in humility consider others better than yourselves”

Philippians 2:3, NIV

If you really want to know how deeply you are loving others, the Bible has a simple test to gauge the depth of your love. It is those five words in Philippians 2:3, “Consider others better than yourselves.” Now to be honest with you, I do poorly on this test sometimes. How well do you do? Do you really consider others as better than yourself?

Jesus always did. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He is the only perfect person ever to walk on this planet and yet He humbled Himself every day and He considered everyone as better than Himself. (Philippians 2:5-11)

I do not have any trouble considering some people better than I; genuine VIP’s and celebrities. The battle brews inside of me when I am asked to treat a normal person as better than myself: if I am asked to treat the food server who forgot my beverage again or the neighbor whose dog does awful things on my front lawn as better than myself? How about you? Do you have these same struggles? Jesus said in Matthew 5:46 “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?”

This test from Philippians 2 is a tough test. It is so easy in a marriage to consider yourself more important than your spouse. It is so easy when you are the boss to consider yourself more important than your employees. It is so easy when you have money to consider yourself more important than those who do not.

Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, the most important person in the universe, demonstrates that true love considers everybody else as better than one’s self. True love says treat common people, treat family, treat employees, treat others, as better than yourself. Why? Because that is how Jesus treats you.

QUESTION: How are you doing when it comes to treating others as better than yourself? What can you do today to be more like Christ in this area?
