“There was a man named Nicodemus…a member of the Jewish ruling council…who came to Jesus at night.”
John 3:1, NIV

Nicodemus came to Jesus at night because he was afraid others might learn he wanted to follow Jesus. Many people today are secret followers of Jesus. Because they are unwilling to stand up for Christ, they rarely have an impact on their world for Christ. Jesus said to Nicodemus that unless he stepped out of the shadows and followed him publicly, he would miss out on the joy of following Christ.

Jesus indicated Nicodemus would always be confused spiritually if he remained a secret follower. When a person follows Jesus secretly, he should not be surprised about the confusion that follows. The Bible indicates that faith and obedience are required if one is going to follow Jesus. When a person obeys they receive a new level of understanding and insight. God’s secret wisdom is revealed and the veil of confusion is pulled back.

Jesus also taught Nicodemus that secret followers never experience the full measure of God’s love. Jesus taught Nicodemus the law of love and looked at him with eyes filled with compassion. Jesus taught Nicodemus the world’s most loved Bible verse, “For God so loved the World that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Nicodemus was in danger of missing out on God’s love, because he was more concerned with his reputation.

Jesus finally taught Nicodemus that secret followers of Jesus never experience the full measure of God’s blessings in their life. Jesus told Nicodemus he would never fully walk in the light unless he was born again. He must take up his cross and follow after Jesus. He must become a public spectacle. He must be willing to follow Jesus publicly if he expected the light of God’s blessings to illuminate his path. Everyone Jesus ever called to follow after Him, He called publicly.

QUESTION: Will you step out of the shadows of your spiritual walk and stand up for Christ? What is keeping you from following Jesus publicly?
