“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”
Proverbs 14:30, NIV

In John Maxwell’s book The Winning Attitude, he tells of a cartoon where two cows were grazing in a pasture when they saw a milk truck pass. On the side of the truck were the words, “Pasteurized, homogenized, standardized, vitamin A added.” One cow sighed and said to the other, “Makes you feel sort of inadequate, doesn’t it?” The reason some of us feel inadequate and we are not at peace with ourselves is that underlying the entire fabric of our life, is an “if only” mentality. If only I had the type of personality where I was the life of the party, then I would be at peace. If only I was better looking. If only I had those musical abilities. If only I was different. Ever have those thoughts?

Deep down, the “if only” mentality is envy. You are envying another look, another personality, another gift, another talent that someone else has. And there is no peace with envy. The Bible says it rots the bones and makes us miserable.

Some of us who have peace with God do not have peace with ourselves because we still have not come to grips with who God made us to be. And God does not want us to live that way. He gives us His Holy Spirit to help us find peace within ourselves. The Holy Spirit is not going to stop His “covert” operation in your heart until there is reconciliation with God over who He created you to be and even how He created you to look.

He is going to keep after you, until you agree to the depths of your being with the Psalmist who said “I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well.” (Psalm 139:14)

QUESTION: Is envy robbing you of peace? What areas do you battle with in this area? Would you praise God today for how He made you?
