for all of you who were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
Galatians 3: 26-28, NIV
I seem to have the habit of comparing myself to other people. Have you ever caught yourself doing that? It is sometimes discouraging to me to consider that no matter what I am trying to become or accomplish, someone else is better. Everywhere I turn I find these people. They preach better, look better, parent better, you name it. The flip side is that I end up cheering myself up by looking for someone who is not as good as I am. At least that is what I tell myself. Turns out it is an endless, vicious cycle that makes us miserable one minute and conceited the next.
Thanks be to God, Jesus has broken this terrible cycle. You see, God saves us and adopts us as His children because of His infinite mercy. Our status before Him is unrelated to anything we do or have done. Our salvation has nothing at all to do with what we are good at. We were “baptized into Christ” and have “clothed (our)selves with Christ.” My life is not about me anymore. It is about Jesus.
The good news of grace is that all those who put their faith in Jesus are set free from the comparison game. Are you Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female? It does not matter! We are all in Christ, and all in Christ are one. Are you rich or poor, well or sick, strong or weak, popular or unknown, successful or struggling, married or single, a Ph.D. or a dropout, tall or short, fat or skinny? None of those things define you anymore. In Christ you are only and forever just that: In Christ!
QUESTION: Is there anything about yourself that you have been holding onto as a source of either pride or shame? Try living today in your rightful and greatest identity…in Christ.
