“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives,
He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love.”
Galatians 5:22, NLT

We are now in the middle of football season and I remember hearing about a wife who came to her husband and said, “You are always watching football games. You must love football more than you love me.” He said, “Well, to be honest with you, I do love football more than you, but I love you more than baseball.”

It is challenging to love other people but the Bible says that when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He helps us to love more deeply. I want you to roll the videotape of your life back about ten years and do a little comparison to your life today. Many of us live in bigger houses, drive bigger cars, have bigger bank accounts, have bigger families, and have bigger waistlines than we did ten years ago. But my question is this: Do we have a bigger heart than we did ten years ago? Do you love more deeply than you did ten years ago? Is your capacity to love expanding or contracting, enlarging or shrinking?

Now, why is this important? Because the Bible says that the greatest quality that you can possess in all of life is love. Jesus taught that a human being is never better than when they are loving God passionately and loving other people deeply. (Mark 12:30-31) In fact, the Bible says “Let love be your highest goal…” (1 Corinthians 14:1) And if you miss that, you miss the highest goal for your life.

What held Jesus to that grueling cross? Why was He willing to endure the pain of the cross, to endure scourgings, public humiliation, intense pain and to die for us? There is only one word. It is love.

QUESTION: So let me ask you again, is your capacity to love enlarging or shrinking? Do you love more deeply than you did ten years ago? If not, why not? What steps can you take today to love others more deeply?
