“Behold how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing-life forever.”
Psalm 133,1-3, NAS
It is in the very heart of God that we, His children, live together in unity. It truly pleases God when we do. Unity among believers was the topic of one of the most heart-rending prayers recorded by our Lord Himself. (John 17:20-23) Some believe they can be “loners,” ignoring or even being in conflict with other believers. Proverbs 6:14 and 19 indicates this cannot be. God really hates discord in His family. Blessings will arise in your life as you take God’s request seriously about being in unity with other brothers and sisters. Jesus said in John 13:35, “(They) will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus prayed in John 17:23, “…that they may be one…brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me…”
Living together in unity brings blessings from the Lord, but it also communicates the Good News of Christ to a lost world.
In Psalm 133 God inspired David to use a word picture of anointing to communicate how God anoints His people as they walk in unity. As brothers and sisters in Christ, “living together in unity” brings the anointing power of the Holy Spirit upon the body of Christ. He will set us apart for usefulness in the Kingdom of God. Our anointing begins with Christ and flows through the body but only as we are walking in unity. Separated by discord and strife, the anointing can not flow. The anointing Spirit of God is quenched and grieved.
