“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive in Christ.”
Colossians 2:13, NIV

Mark Twain once said, “All morality is simply lack of opportunity.” Not exactly the most optimistic view of human nature, would you say? The Bible agrees. In Mark 7:20-23, Jesus offers this tragic assessment. “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean’. For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.'”

There were some in the culture of Jesus’ day who believed that “evil” existed outside human beings and would contaminate them if allowed to make contact. For this reason certain foods and people were to be avoided at all costs. In our day many people believe that human beings are basically good but are corrupted by society. Evil is seen as a social malady which becomes a personal one by indirect means. Jesus’ perspective is that evil is an internal problem of fallen human nature, what theologians would call moral depravity. There is something desperately wrong and deceitfully wicked at the center of our beings.

What is the solution to the sin problem? God must do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We must allow the risen Christ to bring the medicine of His cross and resurrection to our deepest inner parts and give us life! We are not just bad people needing to be good, or good people needing to be better, or ignorant people needing to be smarter, or weak people needing to be stronger. We are dead people needing life! Invite the risen Christ to fill your life, replacing your spiritual death with His life. Hallelujah!
