“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
John 13:15, 17,NIV
Jesus had just done the unthinkable. Washed the disciples’ feet with his own two hands and dried them with the towel wrapped around his waist. This was the work of a common house servant. Yet Jesus had magnificently redefined greatness forever in one fell swoop! Then he turns to those closest to Him on this night before His crucifixion and summarizes the lesson in the language of application.
In our day Nike has popularized the call to action in three words, “Just Do It.” But long before marketing departments were commercializing such things, and, for much higher and nobler reasons than making money, Jesus was inviting his followers into a secret passageway – the passageway to blessing. And the key He shared was the key of application. The key to experiencing the blessing of God in life-altering transformation is simply this, application. Or as Jesus puts it, “You will be blessed if you do them.” The blessing is in the doing.
This is not a “work” that God rewards in some kind of religious performance plan of “works righteousness.” This is the way faith walks into the riches of Christ, freely given. We do not work our way into God’s blessing, we walk by faith applying His Word to access the blessing already ours in waiting. Jesus told the lepers to “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” (Luke 17:14) And “As they went, they were cleansed.” The blessing was already theirs, but the difference came to them in the doing.
QUESTION: What are some areas you desire to see the blessing of Jesus flow in your life? What are you doing about it?
