“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied.
“Do this and you will live.”

Luke 10:28, NIV

America is a nation of trends and fads. If you do not believe it just consider the television game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” It began one night a week and before long it was on seven nights a week. Like most fads this too is beginning to fade. The one question always associated with the show is: “Is That Your Final Answer?”

Imagine 2,000 years ago a lawyer asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. (Already we know he would need a “lifeline” because salvation was not in what we do but what Christ has done for us.) The discussion continued until it culminated with “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Finally, the Savior spoke, “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” The lawyer looked uncomfortable and the entire scene was disturbing. As the lawyer turned to walk away, Jesus stopped him and said, “Did you hear? You have answered correctly!! You won!” The lawyer sadly replied, ‘yes, I heard… you said do this and you will live.'”

Suddenly I realized that this is not a game, it is eternity and we are not listening to the words of Regis but of the Royal King of Kings. Christ said that love is not simply an adjective that describes a relationship…it is a verb that denotes activity! The lawyer realized that he was commanded to love by action, not simply the lovely people…but the unlovely people, the people he hated, the people who were different, and the outcasts of society.

By the way, “What is your final answer?”

QUESTION: Consider the people, who will cross your path today. You see them everyday…although most of the time you act as if you do not. Can you list them by name or by situation or location? Now can you ask God to help you love them through His love today?
