“In his great mercy he (God) has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – only one kept in heaven for you,
who through faith are shielded by God’s power…”
1 Peter 1:3b-5a, NIV
God performs an unimaginable work in every man and woman’s life that trusts Jesus Christ as Savior. 1 Peter 1:3 declares that God gives new birth to all who respond in faith to Christ. In other words, God energizes our soul and we become spiritually alive through our relationship with Christ. 1 Peter also declares that along with new life, God gives us, his newly adopted children, an inheritance, and that inheritance is the promise of eternal life with Him in heaven. And if that is not enough, 1 Peter also declares that the inheritance that God gives us can never perish, spoil or fade. Why? Because it is kept in heaven and shielded by God’s omnipotent power.
Here is what this means for you. If you sincerely trusted Jesus as your Savior, God has not only provided you forgiveness for all the wrongs you have committed against Him in your past, He has adopted you into his royal family and has given to you an inheritance – the promise of eternal life with Him. Because God gave you this inheritance out of love, not based upon your behavior, He has assumed the responsibility to ensure your eternal inheritance. This means that no outside force can steal your inheritance away, nor can you, yourself, do anything to provoke God to rescind your inheritance. You are so special to God that He, himself, stands guard over your inheritance day and night.
QUESTION: Do you sometimes worry that God will reject you from His eternal kingdom? Do the sins that you still commit rob you of your relational security with God? Maybe today is the right time to thank God in prayer that He truly has sealed your eternal future.
