“If you love me, you will obey what I command.”
John 14:15, NIV

Judge Ferrell McRae is a no-nonsense, fair and straight-to-the-point judge in Mobile, Alabama. He has been a judge longer than most people have been alive. He also happens to be a Christian. That is why I was startled when he called to see if I would go to lunch with him saying, “I chewed a man out today in court and you need to hear about it because I am sure he will come running to you”.

As we sat down to eat, the Judge got right to the point: “Preacher, a lawyer came into my courtroom wearing a rhinestone pin that said, “I love Jesus!” He is the same nut that has those “HONK IF YOU LOVE JESUS” bumper stickers on his car. I just wanted you to know that I kicked him out of my court and told him, “If you cannot wear him in your heart, then do not wear Him on your coat!”

I was about to fall out of my chair with laughter just imagining the scene and then I said, “Why did you think to tell me about this guy?” The Judge got a sheepish grin and said, “Because he is one of your deacons!” It seems that the Judge had witnessed this man running red lights in town, making an obscene gesture, and in addition to all this, he had a history of not paying his bills on time.

You see, it was not that the Judge had anything against an individual wearing a rhinestone Jesus pin…he just did not want him to display it on his coat if he did not live in a way that showed a difference in his life. Jesus said to us, “If you love me, you will obey my commands.” Remember, anybody can honk but not everybody will obey.

QUESTION: Just between you and the Lord: Would you consider yourself a “Rhinestone Christian” or a “disciple of Jesus Christ” who understands that the world will see Him as they see us? Take a moment to check both your heart and any pins you may have attached to your clothing and identify which is most effective in your personal witness.
