“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.”
Ecclesiastes 2:10, NIV

People, who have never had contact with Jesus Christ, are doomed to live in profound loneliness, fear, and dread. This anxiety is aroused by not having a spiritual center in life. The only spiritual center sufficient to build your life upon is the person of Jesus Christ. Matthew 7:24 says, “He who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Many people build their lives upon things other than Jesus. They give their ultimate loyalties to secondary objects such as sports, wealth, power, fame, sex, or even good things like loved ones or work. None of these is worthy of our complete and unwavering allegiance. When these other objects receive our ultimate loyalty, we will find ourselves moving from one object of loyalty to another. We will move from object to object because our emotions will cool and we will lapse into indifference and eventually aversion. Everything will have been tried, but nothing will have satisfied. We will live Solomon’s peril, “Meaningless, meaningless everything is meaningless.”

The only way to maintain your spiritual center and be assured that it is stable and unchanging, is to make Jesus your ultimate loyalty. Jesus is the one worthy of our ultimate loyalty because he is eternal, unchanging, durable, and good. If what we are ultimately loyal to is not all of these, then we are doomed to disappointment. We will constantly be in search of a new object of loyalty only to find in it temporary satisfaction.

Jesus instructed us to love the Lord with all our heart soul and mind. Giving this kind of complete loyalty to God will establish a spiritual center that will endure and satisfy.
