“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.’ Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.'”

John 6:26,27,35,51, NIV

The Bread of Life discourse is one of Jesus’ most popular teachings. He taught this to rescue us from the emptiness of life. Once we come to the place where we understand our utter emptiness in life, it is here that we can receive the satisfaction that He gives.

Many of us seek Jesus only to provide the material things of life. It is no different than the crowds of people in Jesus’ day after He fed the five thousand. They liked the idea of a fish-maker and a bread-maker: someone who could give them the material things. They failed to take it a step further and realize this man was also the One who could meet the deep hunger of their souls. Jesus desires to lift our sights and bring us to a place where He can bless us.

In verse 27, Jesus reveals the spiritual realities that He wants us to see. He says that there are two kinds of bread: a material bread that perishes and a spiritual bread that lives eternally. If we focus on the material things in life, we will never be satisfied. However, if we look to Jesus as the “bread of life,” then we will find that He will be our sustenance. We will never hunger or thirst.

The Bible says, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36) Through faith and trust you can experience the full, abundant life Christ offers.
