“My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak.”
Psalm 31:10, NIV
“When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.”
Psalm 32:3-4, NIV
David, the great King of Israel, had come face-to-face with his dark side. David had surrendered to the temptation of momentary sensual pleasure with another man’s wife and now discovered how destructive this dark side could be to his joy and happiness. What a mess he had made of his life in exchange for a moment of excitement and self-gratification.
Have you ever felt like David? Maybe you are feeling exactly as David felt when writing these passages in Psalms. You too have fallen victim to your own sensuality, or greed, or anger, or bitterness. Now you too feel consumed by guilt. Your strength is sapped as in the heat of summer and your bones grow weak all day long. If so, there is good news. David found a way out of his anguish and grief, and so can you. The key to dealing with your dark side is located in the first phrase of Psalm 32:3 “When I kept silent.” As long as David wrestled with his dark side through his own power, his strength was sapped away. But then David wised up!
“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” (Psalm 32:5)
David finally remembered that only God could remove the guilt of his sin and restore to him the joy he lost in his bid for self-gratification.
QUESTION: Are you struggling today with the guilt of your sins? Will you turn to God right now and acknowledge your sin to Him and receive His forgiveness? He is as close as the mention of His name!
