“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
Romans 8:29, NKJV

As a child, I always looked up to my Dad. I felt like he was the biggest, strongest and smartest man in the world. I can remember wanting to walk like him, talk like him and I hoped to hear people say, “You are just like your Dad.” When I was about eight, my grandmother saw me walking down the street and told me, “You walk just like your Dad.” It was a tremendous feeling!

As I read this passage in Romans it was very clear what God’s plan was for my life and everyone who followed Him: To become like His son, Jesus Christ. What an audacious goal God has for you and me. One day it will be incredible to hear God say, “Well done, you became like my son, Jesus.”

If I were to become like Christ, how would I respond to the detractors in my life? Jesus said, “If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn the other cheek.” (Luke 6:29)

If I were to become more like Jesus, how would I treat the down and out, the people our society tends to throw away? Jesus said, “I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” (Matthew 25:40)

This is radical life change; it is an inside job. Too often I work on the outside and hope it works inward. Jesus starts with the thoughts and intentions of our heart and works outward.

QUESTION: How can you begin or continue on this journey of becoming like Jesus? What “next steps” do you need to take? What one area in your life can you focus on right now? What is a helpful scripture verse you could memorize?
