“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30, NKJV
Do you find yourself exhausted doing what God wants you to do? Put on His yoke. But wait a minute. A yoke is a work tool. How can I possibly find rest putting on a work tool? This passage is a challenge to do the right work, in the right way.
A yoke was a wooden tool put over the heads of two oxen so they could pull something. Each yoke was tailor-made to personally fit the oxen that wore it. A poorly fitted yoke would rub sores on the oxen and even cause infection. Then the oxen could not work. To get a perfect yoke the owner took the oxen to a carpenter for fittings.
When Jesus calls us to His yoke, He is telling us that we each have special assignments to do for God. Our work is tailor-made for us. Verse 30 says “…my yoke is easy.” Those words could also be translated “my yoke is well-fitted” like a great old pair of shoes.
There is another important component here. A yoke is made for two oxen to do the work. One ox was always designated as the lead ox. The other followed but never set the direction. If the second ox tried to fight for the lead it only made the job harder.
Christ is in the yoke of our work and ministry to lead the way. When we take the lead, the work only becomes more painful and exhausting. We have to trust that He knows the way to plow the field.
Take back your yoke to the carpenter and let him fit it. Then do not fight for the lead. He knows how to plow your field.
QUESTION: What areas of your life are the most frustrating? Are you going it alone or are you yoked with Him? What do you need to do to turn the lead over to Him?
