“But as many as received Him,
to them He gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name.”
John 1:12, NKJV
Right now I am doing one of my absolute favorite things. I am watching Barney Save Christmas. I am not a huge Barney fan, and we have seen this video twenty-three times and it is only July! But still, it is one of my favorite things. You see it is not the viewing fare I love, it is the company. I am not big on Barney, but my two-year old is. I am carefully positioned in our over-stuffed, over-sized chair and He is comfortably perched on my lap. Entertained, content, sippy-cup in hand, motionless; he is mesmerized by the dancing dinosaur – and I savor our moment together. You see it is just a few fast years that little boys sit on their Dad’s lap. Believe me, I know it. Someday too soon, he will be big and busy, playing and exploring, too much to do to slow down for times like this. Children grow up so fast.
It is this precious time with my boy that has helped me rethink my relationship with my Heavenly Father. I too get busy and I forget, or more accurately, simply neglect my time with God, or when I do carve that time to be with Him, I worry about my words. After all, I am communing and communicating with the God of the Universe – I should be dealing with fine points of theology, global warming, nuclear disarmament, something significant and monumental. But then I remember that it is not clever conversation my son offers me. I simply enjoy his climbing up on my lap and spending time together. It is the supremely simple act of being together that brings joy to this Father’s heart. I am guessing it is the same with our Heavenly Father too.
QUESTION: Have you been careful to protect your precious time today with your Heavenly Father?
