“The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.”
Romans 13:11-12a, NIV
The address of University Baptist Church of Coral Gables where I am privileged to serve as pastor is 624 Anastasia. We had a great laugh the day I received a letter addressed to Pastor Bill White, 624 Anesthesia! Easy enough mistake to make. But then I began to reflect on the meaning in the mistake.
I guess we all know that an anesthetic is a substance administered by a doctor so that surgical patients will feel no pain. General anesthetics cause the patient to go into a type of deep sleep. Not unlike some church members do under the preaching of pastor types like me! What is the old joke about our church services beginning at 11 o’clock sharp and ending at 12 o’clock dull?!
This is a tragedy to be avoided at all costs. Now, more than ever, Christ’s followers must wake up! This is no time for spiritual Rip Van Winkles, there is too much at stake for the witness of Jesus Christ in our world. The text makes three crisp calls like a bugle blowing reveille to rouse the troops. “Wake up” is first in verse 11. “Clean up” comes next in verses 12-13: “Let us put aside the deeds of darkness…Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.” The third call (verse14) is to “Dress Up.” “Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.”
QUESTION: What are the areas in your life where you are sleeping? Do you need to clean up and clothe yourself afresh today in Christ?
